COLEG CAMBRIA – A LEVELS: Deeside students achieve stellar results

AN INSPIRATIONAL tennis coach and youth politician has smashed his A Level results.

Jonathon Dawes, from Rhyl, achieved A*s in Government and Politics, Economics, PE, and Welsh Baccalaureate at Coleg Cambria Deeside.

The 18 year-old will now attend King’s College London to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

“I am absolutely over the moon to have achieved 4A*s at A level,” said Jonathon.

“It is honestly a dream come true, and I couldn’t have done it without all the incredible support from Coleg Cambria and my subject tutors who always went above and beyond for me.

“My time at Deeside Sixth Form Centre has been a blast from start to finish! The continued academic and extracurricular support from all the staff and subject teachers over the past two years has been outstanding and I couldn’t recommend the college enough to anyone aspiring academic success.”

He added: “I am off to King’s College London in September to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics. King’s College London is a world-leading University and having the opportunity to study there will bring so many exciting opportunities – I can’t wait.”

Earlier this year, Jonathon – a former pupil at Rhyl High School – was among a group of seven people appointed to the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) Council.

Outgoing Student President at Deeside Sixth Form Centre, he is also a former member of the Welsh Youth Parliament and was lauded for his work and community spirit before and throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

He was named a Positive Role Model in the National Diversity Awards 2020, became head coach at Rhyl Tennis Club, won Denbighshire Sports Coach of the Year and received a British Citizens Youth Award.

A Sport Wales Platinum Ambassador, he set up inclusive tennis sessions for wheelchair users and even put on a Tennis Skills week at Rhyl High School, giving more than 1,000 children the opportunity to participate.

“Tennis has been a large part of my life for many years and encouraging more people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, get fit and enjoy the sport is my main aim,” said Jonathon.

“I am dedicated to being a positive role model and a strong voice for young people and will continue to fight for the rights of others, both in my position within sport and politics, but also for all youngsters in Wales and beyond.”
